Mare Care and Management
Anytime you send your mare to be bred there is one ultimate goal…to raise
a healthy foal. This essentially starts with good mare management,
and the matriarchs of your breeding program, will be treated like
the queens they are at Bowman Ranch, LLC.
Mares that reside at Bowman Ranch,
LLC will be arranged according to their
specific needs. We will have mare motels for the
“easy-keepers” with safe stalls, automatic watering systems and
several large pastures attached to each Mare Motel for stress-free
management.
There will also be a climate controlled barn for more sensitive mares and
the mares that need to stay in show form. There will be 40 mare
stalls and 5 foaling stalls.
We will also provide these mares with the essentials to allow them to
conceive carry and give birth to healthy happy foals and will
provide them with the proper nutrition required to do so.
Mare Motels and Pastures
◊ 40+ stalls
◊ automatic waterers
◊ breeding/insemination area
◊ several large pastures
◊ Centaur 3 “board” fencing
◊ Automatic frost free waterers
◊ separate pastures for wet and dry mares
Breeding Soundness Exams
Once your mare arrives at Bowman Ranch, LLC, we will evaluate her for breeding
soundness. We will perform a uterine culture and cytology to make
sure each mare is “clean” and we will insure that the mare is
physically able to carry a foal. We will also be able to provide
blood work, uterine biopsies and histopaths as needed.
Artificial Insemination Services
To ensure the safety and health of both the mare and foal, all breeding is
done via artificial insemination. Mares on the farm may either be
bred using cooled, frozen or fresh semen, but all using artificial
means.
Mare inseminated on the farm by stallions on the farm will be inseminated
with a “dose” of semen that will have at least 500 million
progressively motile sperm cells and will be prepared with semen
extender. Mares that we ship semen to, will receive 1-2 “doses” with
at least 1 billion progressively motile sperm cells, and will also
be prepared with semen extender.
Each mare will be monitored for her estrus cycle with daily teasing, with
confirmation using ultrasonography for the correct timing for
insemination. While we will breed most mares on the farm, we will
also offer shipped semen for outside mares. Most shipped semen will
be sent to the mare owner via FedEx Overnight Priority Service, but
counter-to-counter services are also available with the proper
notification. We are just minutes from the Greater Cincinnati
Airport making this easier for Bowman Ranch, LLC to accommodate you.
Pregnancy Evaluations
Once your mare has been inseminated, Bowman Ranch, LLC will provide follow-up
ultrasounds including:
◊ Check for Ovulation after insemination
◊ 12-15 Day Pregnancy Check
◊ Check for Twin Embryos
◊ 30 Day Pregnancy Check
◊ 60 Day Pregnancy Check
If you decide to leave your mare at Bowman Ranch, LLC for the length of her
pregnancy, the staff at Bowman Ranch will closely monitor your
mare’s overall health, hormone levels and give her the pre-natal
care necessary for that “bouncing baby”.
Foaling Services
Bowman Ranch, LLC will also offer foaling out services for the mares that are
pregnant when they arrive and/or stay throughout
the whole breeding process. The mares, once ready to foal will be
moved to the foaling stalls, located in the hospital barn. They will
be monitored 24/7 with the use of closed circuit cameras with
monitors in several areas on the farm. There will also be a member
of the staff on “night duty” to lend a hand, should your mare need
assistance with foaling.
The well qualified member of the Bowman Ranch,
LLC staff will stay with the
mare and foal until the mare is settled with the foal, the foal
stands and nurses and the whole placenta passes from the mare. This
staff member will “dip” the umbilical stump, administer an enema to
the foal and ensure that the mare is letting down enough milk for
the foal. The mare and foal once settled will then be left alone but
closely monitored with the cameras. 12 hours after parturition the
mare and foal will be evaluated by one of the licensed veterinarians
on staff at Bowman Ranch, LLC. The veterinarian will perform a
post-partum exam on the mare and the foal, and test the foal’s IGg
level at our in house lab. We will also be able to provide immediate
care for mares and foals in need.
